Let me first start off by saying if you are looking for a deck that revolves around the strength of Oloro do not use this one. I attempted to make this deck work well by supporting Oloro, Ageless Ascetic but I soon figured out that Oloro’s abilities are not strong enough to center the deck around Oloro. Even with a good strategy of consecutive life gain I always found myself struggling for mana as I would use much of the mana for Oloro’s ability to draw and do 1 damage. In order to win by damage you need to have a lot of control. Even with control I just couldn’t do damage fast enough. I got to the point where I basically made my Oloro deck into a token deck to make bigger plays. I think the best way to make an Oloro deck with synergy based around Oloro’s abilities is by including the win cards like Test of Endurance and Felidar Sovereign. That type of win style just isn’t for me I rather combo out or do some old school massive damage. So that is why my deck has transitioned into a more combo centered EDH deck. I use Oloro to gain and pad my life a little as well as give me some extra draw power when I am in a rut. As far as putting Oloro into play goes its not a main priority at all in this deck.
Yes, I still have many gain life cards in here. I couldn’t get away with having an Oloro deck and not having some synergy but most life gain is associated with big win combinations with Vizkopa Guildmage, Hatred, Sanguine Bond, Storm Herd, and Serra Avatar. After all of the frustration of only doing small damage with Oloro with my focus on board control I decided I wanted to make the deck around all big game changing plays. Many of these game changing plays cost A LOT of mana I most often start the game by tutoring for Academy Rector. With Academy rector handy I can sac him or block with him to get out Omniscience. With Omniscience on the table I can use some of my drawing aids like Jin-Gitaxias, Core Augur to get myself a full hand and make big plays early on in the game. Obviously the game doesn’t always work out that nicely something gets countered or omniscience gets destroyed so I also put lots of mana ramp in my deck to make sure I can still play my high mana costing spells.
Now if you look at the deck you can see very clearly that all the combos are pretty synergistic. Start with Serra Avatar for instance there are multiple ways to win with him, either by making him unblockable with Rogue’s Passage or Venser, the Sojourner. You can also win with having Vizkopa Guildmage out or Sanguine bond to make your opponents lose life when you gain life then pair Serra Avatar with True Conviction, Swords to Plowshares, or even Miren, the Moaning Well. There is also the Exquisite Blood and Sanguine bond infinite combo in the deck of course too as they both pair well with they deck. Apart from that there are several other possible combos similar to that of using Serra Avatar. I also included some combos with Deadeye Navigator, Mimic Vat, and Copy creature cards in order to take advantage of Ashen Rider, Peregrine Drake, Draining Whelk, Rune-Scarred Demon, and many more creatures with abilities when they come into play or leave play. All and all it is a fun deck to play with different ways to win every game. This deck can be playable in both one on one and multi-player although I have had better luck one vs one.
